Barnstable County is located in South Eastern Massachusetts. The County forms a handle-like peninsula that jets out into ocean. The various towns, villages and Islands of Cape Cod comprise the county. Barnstable County was established in 1685. The county shares a boarder with Plymouth County. The U.S. Census Bureau lists the land area at around 395.51 square miles with over 540 miles of coastal shoreline.
As of 2009, there were 221,151 people living within the county putting the population density at 559 people per square mile. In 2000 there were 94,822 households, at 2.28 person per household while the average size family was 2.28. 24.30% of all households had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.20% of all household had married couples living together. The percentage of Females in 2009 was 52.7%. The percentage of persons 65 years old and over in 2009 was 24.5%, more than 10% higher than the Massachusetts state average. The median household income in 2008 was $57,379. That year it was estimated that 8.1% of the population was living below the poverty line which was below that Massachusetts Average.
