Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) injury occurs when the joint and ligaments of the jaw suffer a trauma related injury. This is a very serious jaw injury and most Massachusetts injury attorneys aren’t even aware that it exists. The temporomandibular joint (also known as the jaw joint) is located below each ear. This joint attaches the lower jaw to the skull and allows the lower jaw to move up and down and side to side which gives us the ability to talk, chew and open and close or mouths.
Temporomandibular joint injuries are similar to cervical whiplash injuries. Like cervical whiplash injuries, TMJ injuries can occur when the head is whipped violently back and then forward like in a rear-end car accident. Wear and tear, grinding teeth and other forms of trauma ranging from slip and fall accidents to motorcycle accidents can produce TMJ injuries.
Symptoms of TMJ Injuries
Temporomandibular joint injuries usually result in a combination of the following symptoms:
- Pain or pressure behind the eyes;
- Sensitivity to light or photophobia;
- Persistent or frequently occurring migraines or headaches;
- Dizziness;
- Deep inner ear pain;
- Back, neck and shoulder pain;
- Pain in jaw and below the ears;
- Jaw locking open or closed;
- Inability to open mouth comfortably;
- Facial Pain;
- Pain when chewing.
Temporomandibular joint pain that lasts more than a week after a car, truck or slip and fall accident usually requires medical attention. Some TMJ injuries heal over time with the help of pain medication, heating pads and ice packs. In cases of severe TMJ injuries surgical intervention might be called for.
A car or truck accident that results in injuries to the head, neck or jaw can cause a TMJ injury or other dental injuries. A direct impact to the side of the head can result in a fractured, dislocated or displaced joint. A whiplash injury can also stretch the ligaments and tissue surrounding the TMJ. There are several causes of TMJ injuries. TMJ injuries can have a serious effect on your quality of life. If you have suffered a TMJ injury because of someone’s negligence or carelessness then you are entitled to compensation for your injuries.
