The posterior cruciate ligament (MCL) is located in the back of the knee. It is one of four ligaments that form the knee joint by connecting the femur (thighbone) to the tibia (shinbone). The posterior cruciate ligament helps stabilize the knee by preventing the tibia from moving backwards too far.
Posterior cruciate ligament injuries are the most uncommon knee ligament injury. The PCL is stronger and larger than the ACL but it can still suffer tears. Less than 20 percent of all knee ligament injuries involve to PCL. PCL injuries usually occur along with injuries to other structures in the knee. If there is a PCL injury then odds are that cartilage, other ligaments, and bone have been injured.
What causes a PCL tear?
PCL injuries can happen many ways but injury usually requires a great amount of force:
- A direct hit to the front of the knee (like when a bent knee hits a dashboard or steering column in a car accident)
- Twisting or hyper-extending the knee
- Landing on the knee while it is bent
Symptoms
- Mild to severe pain with swelling that develops quickly after the injury
- Swelling that makes the knee stiff and may cause a limp
- Wobbly sensation that makes it difficult to walk
- Inability to bear weight on the knee and feeling like it may “give out”
Diagnosis
The doctor will perform a physical examination on the knee to determine if there is a strain, tear or rupture. The patient will be sent for an MRI in order to pinpoint the extent of the injury and rule out injuries to other structures in the knee. X-Rays could also be ordered to determine if the femur or tibia sustained a fracture.
