Diagnosis, Treatment, and Complications from A Broken Cheek Bone
Although it is phrased in the singular, the “cheekbone” is actually comprised of several bones. When a fracture occurs, these individual bones can fracture in different combinations, depending upon the circumstances of the injury.
After nasal fractures, zygoma fractures are the most common type of facial fracture, usually associated with blunt trauma to the cheek from car accidents, as well as assaults, and contact sports.
Diagnosis
Your doctor will perform a physical examination to check for fractures, and typically order a CT scan in order to find any damage that is not superficially obvious, typically due to swelling, which often hides other facial trauma or disfigurement. It is crucial that patients get their injuries evaluated, as untreated injuries can lead to poor cosmetic results. It is helpful to ensure that you are evaluated by a doctor who specializes in facial trauma.
Treatment
Treatment of cheekbone fractures depends on the extent of the damage done to any of the underlying structures. In most cases, where the bones have moved or been dislocated, they can be repositioned as by making incisions in the mouth and brows and using various tools under the skin to hold the bone fragments in place during surgery. If the bones have not moved or been displaced or dislocated then surgery is not typically required. However, in instances where vital organs such as the eyes are in danger, more complicated surgical intervention may be necessary.
There are both risks and benefits associated with surgery for cheek bone facial fractures. While they can help the facial fracture heal faster, improve the shape of your cheekbone, and help with associated restrictions concerning vision and operation of the mouth, there are also risks involved with surgery. The nerve that runs through your cheekbone can be bruised causing associated tingling or numbness in the face, and a drooping eyelid (ectropion) could result, which would require additional surgery. Other, more serious risks such as bleeding around the eye socket and infection are rare, but nonetheless serious..
Complications
Sometimes patients who suffer from a broken or fractured cheekbone/zygoma also suffer additional injuries to the eye socket, as the cheekbone is part of the eye socket and protects it (as well as linking the upper jaw to the nose).
