Mouth and Dental Injuries, Symptoms and Treatment
Unfortunately, serious mouth and dental injuries are a common result of car accidents, and they may initially be ignored in favor of treating other, more obvious injuries. Not only is there sometimes a delay in treating these issues, but dental insurance plans will not always cover associated procedures because they might deem them to be “cosmetic” in nature.
Teeth
Injuries to teeth during accidents and their associated procedures, include:
- Avulsion: When a tooth is knocked completely out
- Fracture: Chips, breaks, or cracks, typically broken down into three categories based upon what is fractured and how far it extends; Ellis I injuries involve a fracture of the crown that extends through the enamel of the tooth; Ellis II injuries involve fractures to the enamel and dentin layer; and Ellis III injuries involve fractures to the enamel, dentin, and pulp lawyers
- Change in color
- Dental Luxation: When a tooth is loose or has changed in position
- Intruded: When the tooth has been jammed into the gum
Mouth Injuries
Associated injuries can include gaping mouth wounds or those involving loose flaps of tissue that may require stitches. Sometimes a broken tooth or orthodontic wire gets stuck in the tissue and must also be removed. In accidents involving injuries to the mouth, pieces of skin such as the frenulum—the piece of skin between the lips and gums under your tongue—can also be pierced or tear. There can also be injuries to your tonsils, the roof of your mouth, or the back of your throat.
Symptoms
Some of the symptoms associated with mouth and dental injuries can include severe toothaches, facial pain or swelling, bumps near the damaged teeth, and/or signs of infection, such as warmth, redness, red streaks on the gums, pus surrounding your tooth, and fever.
Treatment
Some of the common mouth and dental injuries that require immediate medical attention include:
- When a permanent tooth has to be reimplanted in its socket if it has been knocked out. This typically works best if it is put back into the socket within 30 minutes (and no later than two hours)
- A tongue that has been ripped or cut off
- A broken tooth or dental appliance that is in a wound or has been swallowed or inhaled
