What Is A Dislocated Hip?
The hip is a triad of bones – the ilium, ischium and pubis – that are designed to carry and move the entire weight of the body. The hip is a ball and socket joint. When a hip dislocation occurs, the ball becomes unstable in the socket causing it to slip or pop out of the joint. A hip dislocation is a serious medical emergency requiring immediate medical treatment.
What Causes A Dislocated Hip?
Hips become dislocated following blunt trauma or force or when there is an unexpected or unbalanced movement. Once a joint dislocates, it can continue to dislocate again in the future. Common causes of dislocated hip injuries include:
- Falls in nursing homes or playgrounds;
- Workplace or construction accidents;
- During game play in sports activities like soccer or football; or
- Motor vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle or pedestrian crashes or accidents.
What Are The Symptoms Of A Dislocated Hip?
Loss of motion, pain during movement, numbness around the hip, tingling feeling, swelling, bruising and discoloration are symptoms of a hip dislocation.
How Is A Dislocated Hip Diagnosed?
A medical doctor performs a clinical examination of the hip and checks for any breaks to the skin. X-rays and MRIs will be ordered to enable the doctor to see which joint or bone is affected.
How Is A Dislocated Hip Treated?
The goal of treatment for a dislocated hip is for the dislocated joint to go back into its natural place. This goal can be accomplished through RICE: rest, ice, compression and elevation, or may need additional therapies. Other treatment options include manipulation or repositioning, immobilization, medication, and rehabilitation.
Joint manipulation is performed by chiropractors or physical therapists and is a manual adjustment of the hip bones to help return them to the appropriate ball and socket joint. After the bones are returned to their natural place, immobilization occurs. The victim will wear a sling, splint or cast for several weeks to prevent the joint from moving and permit the area to heal. If these therapies do not work and damage to nerves or blood vessels occur, surgery is necessary to reconstruct the joint and repair any damaged structures, through hip replacement surgery.
