What is Grand Larceny Over $1,200?
In Massachusetts law, grand larceny is one of the two types of larceny by stealing in which the value of the goods, money or property stolen exceeds $1,200. As its adjective implies, “grand” larceny is a serious felony, punishable by up to five years in state prison and a $25,000 fine. (By contrast, petty larceny, which involves thefts of less than $1,200 counts as a misdemeanor rather than a felony.)

If you have been charged with grand larceny, our criminal defense attorneys may be able to plead you down to a lesser charge, or negotiate with the district attorney for a period of probation rather than jail time, after which the offense may be erased from your record. In some cases, we may be able to produce evidence exculpating you of the crime entirely.
What is Petit Larceny under $1,200?
Petit, or “small” larceny is the term applied by the state of Massachusetts to the theft of property, goods or money amounting to less than $1,200. Petit larceny is a misdemeanor, punishable by (at most) a year in jail, though it’s rare for any first-time offender to be sentenced so severely. (That’s not the case with grand larceny, a felony charge that applies to thefts of more than $1,200 and can result in five years in jail.)
As inconsequential as it may seem, a conviction for petit larceny, even if it involves no fines or jail time, can leave a mark on your permanent record, which may make it difficult to find a job, get a scholarship, find housing, or obtain a loan at a later date.
Our criminal defense lawyers may be able to negotiate with the district attorney to have your petit larceny case dismissed, pending a period of probation and restitution of the value of the property stolen.
