Runaway cars caused by unexpected accelerations have killed more than eighty people and injured hundreds more. There have been over 6,200 complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration regarding sudden unintended acceleration incidents involving Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

After receiving over 2,000 reports of unintended acceleration Toyota initiated a recall of millions of Toyota vehicles in 2009. Toyota blamed the recall on unintended acceleration issues caused by defective floor mats that caused the gas pedal to stick. However, a lot of the customers complaints dealing with the unintended acceleration issue had nothing to do with the floor mats. Instead many of the complaints dealt with “sticky pedals” which caused the gas pedal to get stuck partially depressed.

Toyota remained under continued pressure from the media and government regulators about the potential problems with “sticky pedals.” Toyota finally buckled under this pressure and, in January of 2010, announced an second recall of 2.3 million vehicles. This recall was issued to address all unintended acceleration issues regardless of whether a floor mat was involved.

Toyota later admitted that their 2009 recall did not cover all the defective motor vehicles. During the course of the company’s investigation they discovered the problem with the floor mats. However, they also discovered the problem with the “sticky pedals.” Instead of revealing the sticky pedal issue to the public and issuing a recall Toyota tried to hide the problem. Toyota would have to pay a 1.2 Billion dollar fine for hiding the deadly unintended acceleration issue.

Toyota and its other company, Lexus, have recalled several models because of sticky gas pedals and floor mat gas pedal entrapment issues. These models include:

A Note About Driver Error: NHTSA states that there are over 16,000 preventable accidents caused by gas and brake pedal error every year. The NHTSA stresses the importance of keeping the right foot in the middle of the accelerator and the brake pedal. They also attribute many accidents to not wearing suitable shoes.
