Death Rate for Mobile Home Fire Victims is Nearly Double as High as for Site-Built Homes

Mobile home park and trailer fires can be a destructive force. A neighbor’s negligence or a landlord’s failure to provide a safe environment, can cause you to lose your home, all of your belongings, or a loved one. A fire started in one home can easily spread to the next home and before you know it an entire park can be engulfed in flames.

The death rate for mobile home fire victims is nearly twice as high as for site-built homes. The U.S. Fire Administration published it’s eight edition of “Fire in the United States” noting the danger of mobile home fires as being significant:

Mobile homes are a special category of one- and two-family dwellings. While only a small fraction of the U.S. population lives in mobile homes, they have had a severe problem in terms of fire fatalities in the past-double the fatality rate per fire compared to other homes. This caused the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1976 to establish strict standards for improving the fire safety of such homes (often now called “manufactured housing”). The HUD standard clearly made an impact. However, the mobile home fire problem is still significant.

Mobile Homes Are Built to be Moved Around

Unfortunately, mobile homes are built in a fashion that enables the structures to burn rapidly. This portability and the small size of moveable homes allows fire to spread more easily in mobile homes than most site-built homes. For example, mobile homes are raised off the ground and the crawl space underneath the home is often covered with decorative skirting. If the material, which is often wood, is ignited, fire can quickly spread underneath the flooring as well as climb and surround the outside of the home. Once floors catch fire, they can collapse causing further damage to property and increasing the risks for catastrophic injuries or loss of life.

When fires start inside a mobile home they spread rapidly.  Mobile homes are designed and built to be portable and many contain aluminum which both light-weight but also has a low melting point. When metal supports, roofing and siding are heated and begin to melt they can collapse.

Mobile home appliances are much smaller than those used in site-built homes but in mobile homes built before 1976, heating and cooking equipment were installed in close proximity to sleeping areas. Older mobile homes often were built with propane heating systems more susceptible to fire than electrical units.
